Look up some of the historical fiction novels by GA Henty. The language is slightly archaic (they were written in the late 1800's), but the writing is just plain good and the stories are always very exciting. I'd especially recommend "The Dragon and the Raven," "In Freedom's Cause," and "A Knight of the White Cross: A Tale of the Siege of Rhodes." These books are addicting, and make you a history buff in the process. I know for sure that they're in the AR program, because they're the sole reason I won the contest at my school 3 years in a row. There's so much suspense, action, adventure, fantasy, and well...suspense put into the series! There's four books, if you're wondering, and the fifth book is coming out on May 5th.
