What is the greatest book you have ever read or believe is the greatest ever written?

Book
I Love Cheesus asked:

What is your opinion.
Do not answer with a list of books, put your answer as a single novel, and why you believe it is the greatest book you have ever read or why it is the greatest book ever written.
I don’t want any jokes, I wanted some serious opinions. Thanks.
No offense, but Stephanie Meyer can’t write worth a damn.

Hands down Tale of Two Cities, it has history, politics, intrigue, mystery, humor, and a love story. And it has, for me, the best beginning quote and ending quote a book could have.

Vanity oh vanity. With great embarrassment, I would select one of the books I wrote “Love and Optical illusions”. — It took me about 50 years to make notes and then write.

In regards to your request for my favorite novel, vanity would hit me again. I would select a novel I wrote “God’s Ancestors” – a tale about God’s parents, God, God’s wife, Natalie, and their son Jasper, whoops their son Jesus. –

The setting of the novel begins on a technologically advanced planet which had been formed shortly after our Universe was formed 13.7 billion years ago.

    chagrin.

Edit: “God’s ancestors” starts with a love story about a nurse and a young brave scientist who volunteered for a dangerous mission. (This book has been in paperback for several years and has sold mostly in the UK. It needs revised since I have been on R/S for the last 3 years.

So you have encouraged me to get off my duff and start revising it. I think I will post the first few chapters on my 360 page and ask for several of you to help me fine tune it before it goes to press.

PS: Feel free to Google it for sample pages (to see if it is boring). You can Google it by the title or you can simply Google my name Wayne Thornton

(I wrote it but I gave my wife co authorship cause she encouraged me to write it.)

    Are you bored yet? lol

lol — PPS: Julius (below) has read the un revised original paperback of God’s Ancestors. ( I am not sure which edition, I had 3 distributors. Vanity vanity )

note to Julius: What’s wrong with you Julius why didn’t you name my book? ———– Just kidding, you knew I was.

Edit: (((Julius))) Hail Caesar ! Hail to Cervantes !

Damn the windmills, full speed ahead.

Edit 3/16/09 : Would you mind helping me fine tune chapter 1 of my new revision of “God’s Ancestors” ?

    Lord of the Rings/ Similmarillian

Tolkien was a genius, pure genius. He really got me into fantasy and all that.

  17. Julius C says:

“The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha”

It is funny, it is melancholy, it is heroic, it is a farce. It is life in print.

Edit: Wayne you write a good book but I had to pick a *single* one. It was a tough call but I had to give the shout out to Cervantes. :)

For me its really hard to say the “greatest” but Charles Dickens story A Christmas Carol is one I never get tired of. Also Candide, for quite different reasons, The Metamorphosis, by Kafka, and The Dialogues of Plato.

My favorite book is Ender’s game by Orson Scott Card.

It is smart, compelling, and at points, can make you laugh.
any book in the ender’s game series would also suffiice.
